Koji Yamaguchi

Inspired by his grandfather, who was also a landscape painter, Koji Yamaguchi (b. 1982, Kanagawa, Japan) originally began his path as a painter by drawing the skate spots he frequented as a skateboarder.

His exposure to skate culture in Japan and later on in New York eventually shifted his way of viewing the world. What started as sentimental documentation of designated skate spots (which were often lost to redevelopment or blocked off because of damage or noise complaints) led him to interact with skaters who taught him to view the entire city as a “skate spot”— that is, to view the entire city as a place that he could explore and interact with, and which was worth documenting through painting.
