Fault Lines
Past Exhibition

8 Aug–14 Sep 2025

Gallery Common is pleased to present Fault Lines, a group exhibition of new works by Ichi Tashiro, Minh Lan Tran, and Rose Salane. Curated by Ichi Tashiro in his first exhibition as an artist/curator, the exhibition will run from Friday 8th August – Sunday 7th September 2025.

The title Fault Lines evokes geological fractures—breaks in the earth’s crust that reveal what lies beneath—as well as metaphorical rifts that mark cultural, technological, and emotional terrain. This exhibition brings together works by Ichi Tashiro, Minh Lan Tran, and Rose Salane that trace what happens when systems—bodies, memories, technologies—are fractured. Through painting, sculpture, and video, each artist explores surface as a threshold: a site where memory and transformation unfold. Their works engage in acts of cutting, collecting, burning, and reassembling, revealing how meaning becomes embedded in materials—and how those meanings shift over time, through rupture, history, or loss. These fault lines are not only signs of fracture, but spaces of reckoning—where histories surface, connections form, and healing begins.

Ichi Tashiro is an artist whose practice centres on experimentation with materials, layering, and the interplay between additive and subtractive processes on a planar surface. His recent works—composed of multiple layers of canvas stretched over oil-painted wooden panels—are carved, scorched, and marked in rhythmic sequences that reflect an intuitive engagement with material. These surfaces operate not as images, but as sites of physical and emotional resonance. Tashiro cuts into the skin of the work to reveal what lies beneath: strata of colour, texture, and memory. Fire, often seen as a force of destruction, becomes in his hands a tool of purification—a means to cauterise, to renew, to re-enter the surface through transformation rather than violence.
